SILLAGE AS SELF-EXPRESSION:
THE ART OF SMELLMAXXING

In a world increasingly defined by personal expression, scent has become a new marker of identity. The minimalist skin-scent era is fading, replaced by something richer, more textured and assertive. Extraits, long-lasting oils, and creative layering rituals are redefining how we wear perfume. On social media, this bold new approach has a name: smellmaxxing.

The art of Smellmaxxing

Born in online subcultures, smellmaxxing celebrates the pursuit of amplifying one’s scent. Not simply to smell good, but to make an impression. It is about layering, enhancing longevity, and choosing fragrances that project confidence and individuality. Smellmaxxing transforms perfume from a finishing touch into a statement of self. This new wave mirrors the rise of high-concentration extraits and niche creations that linger for hours. Through thoughtful layering, skin preparation, and deliberate pairing, smellmaxxing has become the modern language of self-expression: a way to let your scent speak first.

“Projection, sillage, and longevity are essential
to a fragrance’s identity.”

– NELLY HACHEM-RUIZ, Senior Perfumer IFF

What inspired Milk Orchid – and how did you turn the iconic Milk into something completely your own?
I wanted my perfect, milky non-milk. After trying more than 50 milk perfumes, I found that some of the best milky scents had more subtle milky facets. I admired the use of notes like sandalwood and coconut, which brought a creaminess, as in Santal Calling by Ex Nihilo or Arizona Bloom from Floral Street. More than just milk, it was important for me to create a full-fledged fine fragrance with interest and nuance. I brought my ideas to Christelle Laprade of Symrise and leaned heavily into her creative expertise for this formula.

DEFINING THE TERMS
To understand smellmaxxing, it helps to know the building blocks of a fragrance’s presence: projection, sillage, and longevity. As IFF Senior Perfumer Nelly Hachem-Ruiz explains: “Projection, sillage, and longevity are essential to a fragrance’s identity. Projection is the aura of the perfume, how far its scent radiates, shaped by the intensity and volume of its ingredients. Sillage is the trail left behind, often created by powerful base notes that maintain their strength from top to dry down. Longevity depends on heavier molecules such as musks and vanilla that anchor the fragrance over time.” Together, these elements define a fragrance’s performance: the way a scent behaves, evolves, and endures on the skin. Achieving the right balance between strength and subtlety is a creative challenge. Take Armani Privé Cuir Zerzura, for instance: a fragrance built on leather, vanilla and orris, designed for power and persistence without ever overwhelming the wearer.

What made you choose these notes?
I knew I wanted fig, vanilla, and coconut from the get-go. These bring the milkiness without the risk of going sour on skin. Beyond that, I wanted to truly collaborate with Christelle and have fun seeing where this challenge would take us. Magnolia and orchid were welcome additions from her. I never pictured a floral fragrance for my perfect milk, but it just worked. The magnolia disrupts the heaviness and brings an ethereal lift. I have never smelled anything like it.

THE SCIENCE OF PERFORMANCE
At IFF, the Science of Performance programme studies how fragrance behaves with scientific methodologies. The initiative aims to bring precision and purpose to fragrance design. IFF scientists combine analysis with sensory expertise to understand how a fragrance behaves, both in chemistry and in the way people perceive it. Using data modelling, the team tracks how a fragrance performs. They measure phenomena like longevity and develop tools to assess aura and sillage, at every stage of wear. The insights inform digital tools developed with perfumers, guiding creative decisions with scientific precision. This approach complements traditional perfumery, adding accuracy to the creative process and helping ensure a consistent, elevated experience.

INGREDIENTS AND COMPOSITION
Performance begins with ingredients. A perfume’s structure depends on the balance between volatile molecules, which create an immediate burst of scent, and slow-evaporating molecules, which anchor it over time. Lighter notes such as citrus and florals evaporate quickly. Heavier elements like woods, musks, and resins reduce volatility and extend wear. Natural ingredients bring depth and complexity. Synthetic molecules add precision and stability, allowing perfumers to better control projection and longevity. Many modern fragrances make use of advanced synthetic materials that enhance diffusion and help the scent linger longer.

CONCENTRATION AND ENVIROMENT
Concentration also shapes performance. An Eau de toilette fragrance tends to offer lighter projection and shorter wear. Eau de parfum provides more richness and persistence. Meanwhile, extraits or perfume oils often deliver the greatest depth and longevity, but with a closer, more intimate projection.

External factors influence results as well. Take skin type, for example, which influences how a fragrance develops and lingers. Oily skin holds scent longer, while dry skin can cause it to fade faster. Temperature, humidity, and even fabric affect how a fragrance projects and lingers. Ultimately, performance is never static, but interacts constantly with the wearer and their surroundings.

EXPERT PERFORMANCE TIPS
According to IFF experts, a lasting scent begins with choosing the right fragrance for your skin. Test different compositions directly on your skin to see which project best. Apply without rubbing, as friction can alter delicate ingredients. Keep your skin well hydrated to help lock in scent. And last but not least: focus on pulse points such as the wrists, neck, and inner elbows, where warmth enhances projection. There is no universal secret for an all-day scent. Performance relies on the perfumer’s artistry, ingredient quality, and formulation expertise, as well as your own chemistry. It’s why dupes may echo the scent profile but never the emotion or precision of the original.

LAYERING:
THE SMELLMAXXING EFFECT
Layering, once rooted in Middle Eastern fragrance traditions, has become the creative heart of the smellmaxxing movement. Brands from D.S. & Durga to Jo Malone are now embracing the idea of ‘layering sets’, encouraging wearers to mix and personalise their scents. For a new generation of fragrance lovers, layering offers both individuality and performance: it extends longevity, amplifies projection, and creates a scent identity that evolves throughout the day. Yet not everyone agrees. Maison Francis Kurkdjian, one of the industry’s most respected houses, remains an artful dissenter. A brand representative explained that Francis Kurkdjian, one of the world’s leading perfumers, designs each composition to stand on its own, with a carefully balanced structure that needs no enhancement.

This tension between purity and experimentation reflects a broader dialogue in perfumery today. For some, a fragrance is a self-contained artwork; for others, it is a palette to be layered, adapted and lived in. Either way, layering has become a modern ritual of self-expression and the most tactile expression of the smellmaxxing mindset.

Do you consider Milk Orchid more of a skin scent or a statement fragrance?
Perhaps a subtle statement. The scent has a soft, delicate flutter, but the projection and longevity will linger for hours.

Which of Commodity’s three Scent Spaces would you place Milk Orchid in and why?
Expressive. It can be smelled for hours by those around you.

Why should fans of the original Milk absolutely try this Limited Edition?
Milk Orchid is for anyone! They both have the same perfumer, but it’s a completely new fragrance with completely different notes.

What’s your favourite thing about Milk Orchid?
I love how creative it is. I always wanted to create a fine fragrance with a strong signature, and I love how we have incorporated milkiness to support this beautiful and unique scent.

WHY SMELLMAXXING EFFECT MATTERS
Smellmaxxing reflects how deeply people connect with fragrance performance. Behind every viral tip lies years of expertise in chemistry, artistry, and technical innovation. Niche perfumery, especially, bridges creativity and science, combining emotion with precision. In the hands of perfumers, the pursuit of projection, sillage, and longevity becomes more than a trend. It’s a reminder that perfume, like identity itself, is meant to be felt, remembered and shared.

What message do you hope this collaboration sends to other young creatives in the fragrance space?
If you do not see an opportunity, make one. This collaboration was my idea from day one – I pitched it to Commodity, and somehow they took me up on it. Here I am nearly two years later selling Milk Orchid at Sephora.
