A SPIN THROUGH THE
FRAGRANCE WHEEL

Ever wandered through a perfume boutique, overwhelmed by options? Don’t worry – we’ve all been there. The world of perfume is a beautiful maze. But what if you had a map? A way to find your path through it, faster and with more confidence. That’s where the Fragrance Wheel comes in. A clever, circular guide that helps make sense of scent and leads you to what you truly love. So, let’s take it for a spin and discover how it works!

Fragrances Wheel of the World

The idea of mapping scent families isn’t entirely new. Early versions appeared as far back as the 1940s, thanks to perfumers like Paul Jellinek, who began organising fragrances to better understand their structure and effect. But it wasn’t until the 1980s that the concept took on a more refined, practical shape – one we still use today. That’s when Michael Edwards, a respected fragrance expert and author, introduced the Fragrance Wheel. It was designed as an easy-to-use guide to help identify a customer’s favourite fragrance family and suggest other scents they might love. A simple idea that transformed perfume consultations and made selecting the right fragrance much easier.

Every part of the wheel helps you spot patterns in what you already love and gently leads you towards something new. Whether you’re layering fragrances, choosing a signature scent, or simply exploring, the Fragrance Wheel makes it all feel more effortless. Now it’s your turn to try the wheel for yourself. Discover all the fragrance families along with matching perfume recommendations, in the Le Parfum Magazine Chapter 6.

Now that you’ve met the wheel, here are a few tips to get started:
1: Start close to home. Love floral amber? Explore neighbouring (sub)families like soft amber or soft floral. Move gradually – your nose will thank you.

2: Feeling bold? Go opposite, since it offers exciting contrasts. For instance, green scent lovers might be surprised by smoky dry woods.

3: Let the season guide you. Summer calls for bright and airy fragrances with tones of water, citrus, and fruits. In colder months, reach for warm scents with creamy woods and soft ambers.

Fragrance Families & Subfamilies

4: The Fragrance Wheel is not just for perfumes. The same families apply to candles, room sprays, even fabric mists. It’s all part of your scent story.

The Fragrance Wheel isn’t about rules: it’s about discovery. Whether you’re new to niche perfumes or already deep in the rabbit hole, it’s a playful way to explore. With the wheel in hand, you won’t just understand your scent style – you’ll expand it. So next time you’re spritzing or simply curious… give it a whirl.

At the heart of the Fragrance Wheel are four main groups: floral, amber (previously referred to as oriental), woody, and fresh. Think of them as the continents of the perfume world. Each one branches into 14 families, each with its own unique structure, mood, and style. Some descriptors, like gourmand and musky, are not shown on the wheel. Instead they are considered sub-notes which can be applied to many of the 14 families to denote an accent.
