THE VISIONARY BEHIND XERJOFF:
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SERGIO MOMO
Sergio Momo, the founder and creative force behind Xerjoff and Casamorati, is renowned for transforming perfumery into a true art form. In Chapter 6 of Le Parfum Magazine, he opened up about his journey from childhood scent memories to global collaborations with icons like Tony Iommi and Duran Duran.
In this online exclusive, we’re sharing several insights that didn’t appear in the print edition – offering a deeper look into the inspirations, stories, and multi-sensory experiences that define the Xerjoff universe.
How did the name ‘Xerjoff’ come to be?
I used to work in London, where colleagues would call me ‘Sir’ at the office. My grandmother had a nickname for me, which was ‘Joff’. Put together, it became ‘Sir Joff’, which evolved into Xerjoff.
Your fragrances draw inspiration from diverse sources. Where do you typically find creative fuel?
I love taking inspiration from unexpected places that wouldn’t usually fit in the traditional realm of perfumery – music, art, travel, a car, even food or champagne. Our Blends collection is a good example. We’ve worked with musicians like Tony Iommi and Max Casacci, who composed music using sounds from the streets and nature – even from Xerjoff flacons! One fragrance we created with him captures the mysticism of incense and underground clubs. These collaborations turn perfume into a multisensory experience, merging scent with music and memory.
In 2024, you collaborated with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. How did his music influence the fragrance?
It was a true exchange. Tony described the scents from his gigs – leather, rum, heat, old patchouli colognes. We channeled that into our first fragrance, Tony Iommi Monkey Special. Then we created a second one, Deified, playing with palindromes and guitar riffs. It’s a complex blend of saffron, cinnamon, and Bulgarian rose. Like the track and video made for it, the perfume has layers that make it a journey – one that loops back to the start when you think you’ve reached the end.
What’s next for Xerjoff and Casamorati? Any exclusives for our readers?
We’ve just launched two new Xerjoff perfumes through an incredible collaboration with Duran Duran with NeoRio and Black Moonlight – one bright, one mysterious – reflecting the band’s duality. We’re also preparing a special addition to the Sketchbook collection, something that collectors will want to get their hands on. And for Casamorati fans, we just unveiled an exclusive scent at Harrods to mark the opening of the first-ever Casamorati boutique: Casamorati Harrods Edition.
